seeing red
this is a collaborative polaroid series about my experience with pmdd, dysmenorrhea & dyspareunia
people who menstruate are often in chronic and hidden pain, and this work is a continual process of normalizing my own moments of this pain. these photos represent just a few of the places where I have experienced this recurring pain. like many, i have had debilitating cramps during work, while hiking mountains, in cars, on beaches, at parties, in bed, and in front of friends, partners, and strangers.
in an effort to de-stigmatize and de-shame my period experience, I ask people who are with me to act as active voyeurs & witnesses by taking a polaroid of me while in pain. instead of continuing the cycle of unseen discomfort, these moments are now documented and saved in a physical format - a grim scrapbook of pained polaroids.
